Stephan’s E3 2018 Predictions

Here it is, my favourite week of the year: E3! The Electronic Entertainment Expo, where the world’s video game industry comes together in Los Angeles, California for a week of announcements, previews, teasers, awkward programmers talking to auditoriums full of people, awkward celebrity hosts trying to sound excited about games… it’s a magical time. PlayStation Experience 2017 Announcements

The annual celebration of PlayStation kicked off Friday night when thousands of PlayStation fans packed into the Anaheim Convention Center for the Opening Celebration of the fourth ever PlayStation Experience. Taking a different tone than the traditional conferences we’ve seen at E3 and Gamescom, this year the stage was set with couches and chairs where various PlayStation executives and designers wearing ill-fitting blazers and graphic tees sat down and had a more personal presentation for the PlayStation fans watching. PlayStation Paris Games Week Recap

I was quite disappointed by PlayStation’s E3 conference this year. There was little to no indie game presence, very few new game announcements and a focus instead on longer trailers for already announced AAA games. I was a bit worried after E3 that PlayStation was losing their way after 4 years of a fairly strong run with the PS4. I found myself gravitating towards Xbox for their strong indie support with gems like Cuphead, Below and loads of other ID@Xbox games as well as amazing support for fan requests like backwards compatibility, System UI upgrades and greater customization options. But today I was reminded why I love PlayStation so goddamn much. Continue reading →

Stephan’s Top 100 Video Games

I’ve been blessed in my short time on this planet to have played hundreds and hundreds of video games. From a very young age, my interest in video games was sparked by my Aunt who moved in with us and brought her Nintendo 64. My parents then indulged my obsession over the years, getting me games for the holidays and my birthdays. My Dad sat next to me on our living room couch from the beginning, through so many different adventures. From Portal 2 to Ratchet & Clank and Don’t Starve he always showed a huge interest in my passion which made me feel more and more excited to explore video games, write about video games and ultimately work in video games. Who Won E3 2017?

Who won E3 2017? This was the question posed to me by my roommate. It’s a question that all the Gamers™ ask around this time of year as the conferences become old news and the convention wraps up. There’s an intense desire to compare the different publishers, aligning ourselves with the team we want to win. The team that made the biggest noises, had the most retweets and showed the best CG trailers. Okay, and maybe some genuinely interesting gameplay trailers. But it’s a desire I never really got. If you ask me who won at the end of E3 2017 I would argue I did. Why? Because there’s dozens of new awesome, beautiful, scary, intriguing and compelling video games coming out in the next year that I can’t wait to play. Continue reading →

E3 2017 Predictions

This is my favourite time of the year. The entire video game industry is gathering in LA this week to announce new games, play new games, get excited about and disappointed about new games… It’s the stuff I live for. I like to watch all the conferences live and of course, make some predictions. Here’s what I got, thanks for reading! Continue reading →

Prey Preview

For those unfamiliar with Arkane Studio’s upcoming sci-fi thriller Prey, it’s a reboot of the 2006 game of the same name. This time around things are very different, Arkane is focusing on branching story arcs and multiple endings similar to their other series Dishonored. In fact, a great deal of the game is building upon the successes of last year’s Dishonored 2, both mechanically and visually. This is another step in Arkane Studio’s mission to etch out and master a particular style in the AAA game scene that’s unique to them. Similar to how Naughty Dog has dominated the third-person adventure genre with Uncharted and The Last of Us, Arkane Studios has their sights set on dominating first-person adventures where characters, world-building and player choice drive the experience both with their breakout Dishonored games and now Prey.
