Last week the Big N held a Nintendo Direct that melted the Internet. While the usual deluge of ports for underperforming Nintendo games was announced, there were lots of new announcements to get fans excited- including the big one that many have been speculating about for months.
Here’s everything we saw in last week’s direct!
This past week I was incredibly fortunate to be able to attend one of the largest video game conventions in the world: Gamescom. Held in the beautiful Cologne, Germany, Gamescom is a weeklong meeting of the gaming industries biggest companies and most passionate fans. I attended as an employee of Blot Interactive thanks to the incredible Norma Rossler, CEO, CFO and WBENC member and one of the coolest folks I’ve ever met.
I’ve been blessed in my short time on this planet to have played hundreds and hundreds of video games. From a very young age, my interest in video games was sparked by my Aunt who moved in with us and brought her Nintendo 64. My parents then indulged my obsession over the years, getting me games for the holidays and my birthdays. My Dad sat next to me on our living room couch from the beginning, through so many different adventures. From Portal 2 to Ratchet & Clank and Don’t Starve he always showed a huge interest in my passion which made me feel more and more excited to explore video games, write about video games and ultimately work in video games. Who won E3 2017? This was the question posed to me by my roommate. It’s a question that all the Gamers™ ask around this time of year as the conferences become old news and the convention wraps up. There’s an intense desire to compare the different publishers, aligning ourselves with the team we want to win. The team that made the biggest noises, had the most retweets and showed the best CG trailers. Okay, and maybe some genuinely interesting gameplay trailers. But it’s a desire I never really got. If you ask me who won at the end of E3 2017 I would argue I did. Why? Because there’s dozens of new awesome, beautiful, scary, intriguing and compelling video games coming out in the next year that I can’t wait to play. Continue reading →
At PAX West in Seattle last year I attended an indie game night in the basement of a local bar. It was one of the loudest, most lively rooms I’d ever been in- you had to shout just to talk to someone right in front of you. And it was in this setting I played Semispheres, a “meditative parallel puzzle game” as described by the game’s designer, Radu Muresan. Radu walked me through the demo of his beautifully vibrant puzzler. I played a couple mind-bending challenges, heard a sparsely ambient soundtrack over the loud atmosphere and even got hints of a charming story with lovely chalk drawn screens. I was really taken in, I rarely find a puzzle game that challenges me without frustrating me and I excitedly looked up Radu on Twitter and awaited the game’s release.
Something really weird and really awesome has been happening on the Arby’s Twitter lately. It seems an incredibly talented marketer is in charge and they’re doing beautiful things. Using pieces of Arby’s boxes, Arby’s sauce packets and anything else they can find, they have been making pictures of pieces and props from games or stop motion animations from games and sharing them to the Twittersphere. They’ve done stuff with video games, board and card games, it’s really quite wonderful and unique. Continue reading →
The first time I heard about GoNNER was when indie developer Rami Ismail tweeted out a picture with a shirt he was wearing that had the game’s logo on it. I was immediately intrigued. I wanted to learn more about this mysterious title and the designer behind it. I had been following the developer simply known as “D!TTØ” on Twitter since I saw Rami’s shirt. From his Twitter, I discovered a treasure trove of lovely prototypes on itch.io that sold me. After a quick search I learned that GoNNER was a gorgeous roguelike platformer coming out soon- so of course, I pre-ordered it immediately. I was not disappointed. Continue reading →
2016 is in the books and after a jam-packed holiday season with hits like Dishonored 2 and Pokemon Sun & Moon, everyone’s wallets are a little lighter. But moving into 2017 the releases aren’t slowing down at all. With huge console exclusives from all the big players and new hardware 2017 is shaping up to be one of the biggest years of the current console generation, if we still even have console generations anymore. So we compiled a list of the best, most awesome video games coming in 2017. Take a look! Continue reading →
As game development becomes more and more accessible, more and more people are making interesting and different games. From indie studios, we’re beginning to see highly polished innovative experiences that challenge the traditional definitions of what it means to be a video game. While the AAA scene continues to pump out sequels for decade old IPs I continually find myself drawn to the new and different games, many of my most anticipated games of 2017 are first time titles for those teams. This year delivered incredible passion projects and massive, ambitious adventures. I hope you enjoy our 10 favourite games from the past year and I would love to hear what some of your favourite games were in the comments! Continue reading →
